Suggestions, somebody?-

Now that it's the school holiday, seriously, I sort of missed school. Every morning, I wake up without a thing to do in mind. Unlike the school days, I jump up from bed the moment I knew I was getting late for school. Well, the excitement to use the computer is not there anymore as I could play all I want in the holidays. In other words, holiday has become a boring thing to me.

It suddenly occured to me that my friends who had been through sweet and tough times with me for the past six years, friends whom I have trusted, are going to be strangers in this day, 2010. I don't know, but along the way, everybody will make new friends. Friends, perhaps, who are actually better than your Primary School friends. Friends whose characters you will never expect. But, the memories will still be printed in my mind. And that's the good thing about it. Not erasing them from my mind.

Maybe 10 years later, we may be out for a gathering. But we won't be close as we had been in our Primary School years. We may be the type of friends who meets in the street and just say 'hi' and 'bye'. We may also be the type of friends who meets in the street and have a long long chat until its sunset. Or maybe even decide to plan a sleepover at each others house.

I don't know. But I wish my friends and I could be the second type of friends.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://icepetal.blogspot.com/2009/11/too-brain-dead-to-think-of-any-nice.html' title='-too brain-dead to think of any nice title. Now I can stay at home and do my own stuff.
Speaking of PSLE, I think that the Math paper is super super difficult. I was, like, cracking my brains for an answer. Luckily, I managed to fill in all the blanks (although not sure if it is correct, confirm wrong).
Other than the Math paper, I feel that the rest of the subjects were manageable. Like the English paper, surprisingly, there was no reported-speech question. But it was replaced with a pet parrot's (or something like that) question, which I thought was slightly more challenging.
The cloze passage was also quite manageable. Not very tough, except for maybe a few questions.
The comprehension was also quite okay. Same, some questions were easier than the others.

Chinese was quite okay also. Except for two 'thinking questions' in the comprehension cloze.

I found that Science was in the middle of the scale, between easy and difficult: manageable.

Overall, I felt that the exam was challenging, and also easy. Maybe because of the Math paper.

But I have already sat for the paper, so it is too late and no use for regrets. Finally, after six years of studies, I am finally able to play computer throughout the day (except school hours)! Yay!

~PJ~

Singapore Kindness Movement

To me, kindness means the act of being kind or the act of courtesy to others. Being kind is very important to me as I think if every one is kind to one another, then there will be no riots, no war, no murders and no crimes. If you meet someone and you act kindly, the impression of you to others will be, 'this persons's so kind'.

We can show kindness by gicing the simplest effort. Like giving up a seat for an elderly or a pregnant lady, to helping someone. Offering to help, or volunteery work is very important. (Except some of the work we don't like. E.g. washing toilet bowls :P)

Singaporeans, according to what I think are rude. They rather pretend to be asleep than do a good deed -- give up their seats for the needies. This type of attitude will cause the person to develop a selfish character, which most of us hates. But when we're rude or being selfish, we do not notice it at all. I think that's the reason why most people say Singaporeans are 'kiasu'. We don't like to be left out last.

Here are some more examples of what I can do to demonstrate kindness:

Placing library books into book bins after reading
Encouraging kindness in other by demonstrating it first
Initiating friendly conversations with neighbours and colleagues while in the elevator
Joking and smiling are my ways to be friendly
Understanding and respecting people's cultures and beliefs
Noticing the people around to offer assistance when needed

A Trip To The Museum

Since it's my second time to the museum, the galleries did not 'wow' me much. Though they really deserved to be 'wow'ed at.

I always thought museums were haunted. They always looked so dark and creepy, so haunting. They gave me an impression of a huanted house.

Not until I visited the Singapore National Museum. It was defitnitely a really fascinating place. It's just like a library, but stored with juicy imformations of the past, the history of Singapore. I really enjoyed the trip there, with my family (1st trip) and with my classmates (2nd trip).

It's important to have a museum in Singapore as not most Singaporeans can tell tourists anything about Singapore. So, the Singapore National Museum is defitnitely the best place for telling histories of Singapore, especially with the cute-looking companion.

I like the food gallery the most. Since my first trip there, it has been my favourite galleries of all. I like it because we get to smell the spices. I like the smell of the wolfberry the most, though I don't like eating it. From the smell, we can actually know how food we eat smell like before we actually eat them, like the wolfberry. It smells completely different raw and cook. Like two different planets.

I learnt a lot of things from the trips. One thing that caught my attetion was the electronics stuff during the olden days. They're really cute looking and they don't a single bit look like the old electronics.

Earth Hour

Greetings, everyone. To me, Earth hour is a very priceless hour in which saves the Earth (for one hour). What I mean is, by switching off the lights during Earth hour, we can save more electricity for that one hour (not ust because of money). But if we cut down our usage on electrcity, every single day, then the Earth will not 'suffer' from Global Warming and thus, we will not get 'BBQed'. (I mean, hello? It's just like bakin' everyone out there...)

Earth hour is held on the 28th March this year, from 8.30 pm - 9.30 pm.

Organising this event will let people understand the importance of Earth, and how it will be like without lights. It also encourgaes all to cut down the amount of electricity we use everyday.

I joined in this event, but technically, only for 10minutes. I went Orchard to shop that night. I reached home only about 9. 20pm. But I was the very-scared-I-would-fall-in-the-dark type (or simply, I'm the afraid-of-the-dark type), so I used the mini torch I bought for camping last year. I really really can't see a thing. I was watching television after I bathe. I was thinking, the electricity I saved just now, is wasted. I'm using it for the television. Oops! Didn't knew that!

Earth is now facing its most dangerous sickness, Global Warming. Global Warming is caused by too much of burning, resulting the layer of air protecting Earth to wear out. Global Warming is also caused by too much of cutting down of trees. Trees help to give out air we need for breathing and other purposes. Thus, if we cut too many of them down, Earth will die... (Oh no!)

We can prevent Global Warming by recycling our items and not using too much of plastic bags. (They look so aunty anyway... Haha... No offence...) The 3Rs. Reuse, reduce and recycle! Yeah!

    ~PROTECT EARTH! NOW! BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!~

Singapore Educational System

I think Singapore's Educational System is strong and powerful. It enables Singapore to work well. If you are a Singaporean, then your future will rely on your studies. Singapore's educational system actually indirectly provide a living for our citizens. Indirectly as in if you don't study well, you won't have a proper job. Thus, they job's salary will not be very high.

The weakness are, I think, the exams and teaching format actually stress out pupils. Primary school pupils when they reach P6, they get stressed out because of PSLE (Primary School Leaving Examinations) as they think these exams set their future, which is quite true. But the teaching format as I think, is not very strong because P6 pupils actually do lots of work but not alot of hands-on activities(as in experiments). Thus, when it comes to doing written paper, as Mr Tan had said, Singapore will win. But when it actually come to hands-on activities, Singapore actually lose out. Because Singapore students are too busy doing papers, homeworks, assessments (blah...blah...) that they neglected hands-on activities and the importance of it. In my opinion, hands-on activities are actually also quite important as it helps to develop a person's creativity. But as I must admit, I actually also quite neglected hands-on activities. =P

As I said, I think Singapore students are doing well in written papers because they have a strong foundation of a certain subject (thanks to all the teachers =P). Like me, my foundation in Math is not very strong, thus. my Math is very weak. (But I will work harder!)

I don't really dislike Singapore's Educational System except only one thing. The system stress out Pupils. (like me) Especially when I hear hear the word PSLE. And plus, my mum's nagging everyday, "Aiyo! PSLE is coming and you're still lazing around?!" in Chinese. *Sigh* I'm can almost recite that dialouge with her...

Beside examinations, I think the ministry should encouraged more hands-on activities like experiments to be conducted. Like this, I believe the Educational System would be stronger.

When foreign students come to study in Singapore, they face alot of problems and more stress than Singaporean students. Firstly, some of them don't really understand how Singapore's Educational System works. Secondly, they don't have any friends, which causes critisizm to start. I think they should go for a course before coming to Singapore to study.

Signing off,
Jolyn YPJ - *The Twilighter*

Outside School Avtivities

Every Monday, I have to stay back in school until 3pm. So when I reach home, it's around 3.15pm. I will shower first, then have tea-break. (and it's amazing that I don't get fat after the tea-breaks everyday) Then, I will proceed to do my homework. After I finished, I will do the exam papers from other schools which my tuition teacher bought for me to do. I normally do an English Paper and a Math Paper a day. They're all 2008 P6 CA1, SA1, CA2 and Prelim papers. After that, I will have dinner. Then I will go on to practise piano for like 45min - 1h. Then, I will watch a bit of television with my family.(Like half an hour... Because I don't really like the TV. It's actually for the family to sit down and 'unite') I will go to study spelling then go to bed after that. (about 9pm)

Then for Tuesday, I will have to stay back until 3.30pm. Then the normal routine, shower, tea-break, homewor, exam papers, piano practise... But I will learn my Chinese Spelling on Tuesday night after watching TV. Then, I will go to bed.

Wednesday is the most dreaded day for me... I have to stay back till 4pm. Then the same again, up to piano practise. Then I will just go to bed. (too tired to watch TV)

Thursday, I will go home right after school (12.30pm) Same old, same old... up to piano practise too... I will still watch TV, then do some more papers, and then finally go to bed.

Friday... Another dreaded day. I reach home at about 1.15pm. I will shower, eat lunch then do my hoework. But I have piano lesson from 3.45pm(or 3.30pm) - 4.30pm. So I will not take tea-break. :( Then I will come home, do my papers and then I will take dinner. Then, I will go for go for Science tuition from 8pm - 9.30pm. I will go straight to bed after I come home.

I have tuition on Saturday late-mornings from 11.30am - 1pm. Then I will take lunch, shower, then go for archery at Tampines Safra. After that, my family and I will go shopping and then go for dinner.

On Sunday mornings, I will go for badminton with my family. But we don't have a fixed time. It may be 9.30am or sometimes 10.30am. My parternal relatives will join us too. So does my father's friends. My father was once a badminton coach and he won a few trophies before. And he wants me to become a professinal badminton player. (Though I told him again and again I want to become a vet or an archer...) He teaches me patiently all the different styles like smashing, backhand and many more. But still, I don't want to be a professional badminton player.
That's all... So here's a poem about friendship written by me, hope you like it:

FRIENDS FOREVER

"Friends Forever,

always together."

That's what we always said,

most of the times when we were afraid.

I used to be afraid of the dark,

but then she came along one day.

I had found my best friend.

When she found out I was afraid of the dark,

she took my hand and said,

"Don't be afraid,

we'll overcome this together.

No matter what happens,

we'll be friends forever."

Then we grew up,

and slowly began to drift apart.

When we saw each other,

we used to say hi.

Then she didn't even smile at me,

for once,

I knew it was goodbye.

Throughout the cause of our lives,

we make friends everytime.

Those whom still say hi,

will most probably never say goodbye.

Take it from me,

what I say is true you'll see.

Some friends may not be forever,

but the memories will stay.

Later on you'll see,

that some are just not meant to be.

But true friends are forever,

because no matter what,

they stick together.

Proud Product of Jolyn YPJ

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://icepetal.blogspot.com/2009/02/poem-by-me-friends-forever-i-noe-its.html' title='Poem By Me: FRIENDS FOREVER (I noe it's not very nice but anyway, it's just like "fake" ok? I think friendship is a very powerful kind of tie between you and your friends. My best friend forever (BFF) is Wen Fang.

I want to defend my friendship between my friends is because I rely alot on my friends. When I'm feeling lonely, I call them up and have a conversation with them; when I have any doubt to any of my work, I call them up and seek help from them, and vice versa. I think friendship exists because people in the world cannot live without a best friend or a friend.

Remember, your best friend or even just a friend, is always your pillar if Forgot to tell you, there was a black out on the second night. My mum and all were at the Karaoke Room. Me and a few of my father's son's friend were fishing. Then, it went totally black. I heard my mum calling for my name. I fumbled towards her. She said she actually told me to stay where i were and not move because if you step into a hole or something, no one will know that you have fallen inside the sea. Luckily the lightstick I bought was useful. I distribted one to evryone. In the end, the power did came back. Long time never post... so sorry.
I just returned from a very unforgettable trip to Malaysia Mersing, Kelong Acheh Resort. An island surrounded by beautiful islands. (Though it's smack right in the middle of the sea) We departed from Singapore in the morning 6 o'clock on the 6th of December. *Yawn* so tired. Have to wake up at 5am. I went there with my parents and relatives and their friends. (Total: 24 persons) We met at the Ang Mo Kio McDonalds (the one by the park). 12 persons in a mini bus. We went by the Woodlands Checkpoint. Once we reached Malaysia Johor Bahru, we took 3 whole hours to reach Mersing. We stopped once or twice for a toilet break.
We have to wait at a small hut by the beach and wait for a boat to come fetch us to the Resort. (As the resort is smack in the middle of the sea). The waves then were rather choppy and the currents were strong. The wind was blowing heavily. (*Brrrrrrrrr... ...* so cold)
The boat we longed for finally came. The boat was rocking heavily as we stepped into it. I had a peculiar feeling that i was going to get seasick. (I have motion sickness) The ride was about 15-30min.
The horror finally appeared at the landing point. The Kelong had no proper landing space. You have to hop from the boat to the ladder attatching the Kelong. It was so very scary because if you miss a step, there you go, right into the waters. I could feel my legs tremble beneath me. Fortunately, everyone made it safely onto the Kelong. *whew*
Once i stepped onto the Kelong, i sat down.(As i have motion sickness) I breathed deeply. Then walked around. WOW. The scenery was so very beautiful. Surrounded by greenish islands. So like nature.
The Kelong was fully equipped with bathrooms and beds. We were staying for 3days 1 night. It was very fun. i learnt how to fish. It requires alot of patience. My uncle caught a catfish. They had to remove the spine because the sting from there is poisonous. My father's friend's son caught a pomfret. So big... I only caught a small yellow fish. *Sniff* ='( well, they're experts. I'm just a beginner.
They provide breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea break and supper there. Here's the schedule:

Breakfast: 7.30am
Lunch: 12.30pm
Tea Break: 4pm
Dinner: 7.30pm

The food was rather nice. I guess my hobbies now are reading, playing piano, playing computer and fishing. Ha.

The trip back was rather scary too. A boy almost fell into the water and he did not put on a life jacket. We all felt relieved for him when he landed in the boat safely. However, he was so shocked that his face went all white and pale.
The trip back made me near the stage of vomiting. We went for lunch at a restaurant. Then, we went to a shop to but some of Malaysia's local product. (Cuttlefish, Sashima and others)
It was a fun and scary trip after all. Here's what i told my parents, "I am not going anywhere near the waters next time!"

My Hits, My Misses.

Hi, I am back. Long time no post. What have I accomplished? Simply nothing. That's true. Nothing. Well, I tried to accomplished something, but failed. The only thing I nearly accomplished was a DV Campus thingy. (Don't really know what it's called. Just know it's called DV Campus... ...)

Together with Andrea, Trina, Zane and Yu Yong, we spent alot of time working on the filming, editing, interviewing and writing scripts. Our teacher was Mr Ivan Ng and sometimes Mr Justin. Andrea and I was camera girls. Zane and Yu Yong were reporters and scriptwriters. Trina was the editor. (Because in the whole group, she is the only one who know how to edit.)

We stayed back in school to discuss and work on it. We used all our effort to do it. Unfortunately, our video was rejected.(I think, Andrea told me)That's the end. Nothing else. End of story.

Another story is an NE camp during the June holidays. I was together with Xin Xian and Wen Fang. It was a very interesting course. The course was held at the Singapore Discovery Centre.

This is the timetable:

8am: Report to school
9am-11am: Do work (projects, creating games...)
11am-12noon: Watch videos
12noon-2pm: Break for lunch
2pm-3.30pm: Work (continue with what we did)
3.30pm-4pm: Go home =)

When it is lunch time, Wen Fang, Xin Xian and I would go and 'discover' the place. We went to talk to a robot. You may think we are crazy, but we really talked to a robot named "Little George". It can like move it's finger or hand.

I especially loved the last day because we were allowed to play at a bungee castle that was set-up there. It was a totally memorable and fun experience for us.

Signing off,
Jolyn Yang Peijun=P

I miss Camp!

I went for camp on 28th August. At first, I thought that it was going too be very boring. But things did not turn out as I had expected. I thought it was actually quite fun.

We went through the Galleries. The first gallery uses the "FIRE", "EARTH" and "WIND" to describe Singapore. "FIRE" was used to describe Singapore's past, about chaos and wars. "EARTH" was used to describe the present Singapore, so peaceful and calm. And last but not least, "WIND" was used to describe the future of Singapore.

Next, we went to watch a movie film. It was called "SO Singapore". The movie briefly describe why Singaporeans behave and look so like Singaporeans. It was an interesting movie. From that very movie, I learned that Singaporeans are so like Singaporeans because number one, they are just like the Merlion. The head is a lion, which signifies bravery. The tail, which is a fish tail, means freedom. Number two, Singapore is well known for its local delicacies.

Then, we went to play a game. It is a game that consists of eight players. It is actually a quiz.

After that, we went to watch a stimulation movie. It was pretty scary though. It was on an MRT Bombing.

We than went for our one-houred lunch break. After I ate my lunch, I hurried back to the gallery to talk to a robot named "Little George" that my friends and I had spotted earlier while walking in the galleria. I spoke to him, "Hi. Bet You couldn't talk, could you?" Suddenly, the robot answered me in a silvery voice, "Of course I could, after all, I am a robot." Wow, its amazing, I asked the robot to move, and he could really do actions. But unfortunately, he could not move his legs. After a while, I felt bored and went away.

I went to play a game with my friends. The games purpose is to step on the things you see on the floor pictured by a projector. It can actually move. But i don't know what it is called.

I went back to class after that.

It was then our second break. My friends (xin xian & wen fang) and me went to play an extremely thrilling game. It was bumpy castle. You must squeeze yourself through a tiny weeny hole (which is the entrance) and roll down to the other side. Then, you will have to climb up tiny little square cushions, which is VERY difficult to grip your legs onto it. Then, you will be on top of the castle. Now, the next part is not suitable for people who is afraid of heights! Now, you will be on top of the castle, right? The you will have to roll down an extremely looooooooooooooooooooooong and tallllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll "hill". Whoever finishes first will be declared the winner. Sounds fun doesn't it? The whole class was crazy for that! It is more like an "adventure" bumpy castle.

Wanna know more? Long time no post! I am back with a good news.

Has anybody been to the national museum? Well I went there on the 7th of June. I know is far behind time.

Anyway, I went there. The first thing that greeted me when I entered the hall was a enourmous and gigantic statue. It was a statue that is 8.5m tall. It is a fibreglass statue wrapped in kebaya or traditional Indoenasian women's blouse.

There is a very interesting gallery which I like very much. It is the Singapore History Gallery. The Singapore History Gallery adopts a story-telling approach, unveiling different perspctives as you travel through tales of the past. To let people appreciate the struggles that early settlers had to overcome, it will take you through the drama of major national events as well as the personal stories of individuals. You can select your own 'path' into the past. It is very thrilling as you just wonder what you will see next. The evens path traces major events and characters that were part of Singapore's history, while the personal path tells the stories through the eyes os the man on the street. With the audio-visual companion that comes in four different languages, listen to interesting insight and quips of your choice to complete this refreshing and enriching journey.

The Singapore Living Gallery are divided into four different rooms:

1) Food - Eating on the Street
2)Film and Wayang - Scripting a new life
3)Fashion - Shopping for identity
4)Photography - Framing the family

There are also other activities. I think both parents and kids will enjoy the trip just like me!

Permanent Exhibitions:
1)Singapore History Gallery

10am - 6pm daily
(last admission 5.30pm)
Adults s$10.00
Seniors, Children, Students & NSF S$5.00

2)Singapore Living Gallery

10am - 8pm daily
(last admission 7.30pm)
Free Admission from 6pm - 8pm daily

Children's Season - Mozart: A Child Prodigy

Thursday 1 May - Sunday 6 July 2008
10am - 6pm daily
Exhibition Gallery 1
Adult S$15.00
Child S$7.50
Recommended for children 6 - 12 years old

Indian Communities in Sinapore

Monday 9 June - Sunday 27 July 2008
10am - 8pm daily
The Balcony, Level 2
Free Admission

Matther Ngui: Points Of View

Wednesday 28May - Sunday 29 June 2008
10 am - 6 pm daily
Exhibition Gallery 2, Basement
Free Admission

Art-On-Site: Surrounding David

Thursday 6 March - Monday 11 August 2008
10am - 8pm daily
Rotunda, Level 1
Free admission

Art-On-Site: It's all about Coalition

Thursday 17 April - Monday 30 June

10am - 8pm daily
Canning Visitor Service Counter, Glass Passage, Level 2
Free Admission

Children's Season Installations: Imprint

Thursday 1 May - Sunday 6 July 2008
10am - 6pm daily
Gallery Theatre Foyer, Basement
Free Admission
For children 5 years old & above

Road Traffic Games Excursion

Hi, long time no post. Well, the trip to the Road Safety Games was fun. Except that I wasn't chosen for the motorist. It looks fun... but it takes longer time to complete. so 还是做回我的 pedestrain 比较好. haha. Just that it's different cover. Interesting book...

The story is about a autistic boy whose father killed a dog name Wellington with a garden fork...

The story's got a lot of um... unsuitable words. And is gross the part where they describe the dead dog... But the rest of the story is quite interesting. It is an addicting book. Once you read, you are qurious to find out what happend. That's why its called The CURIOUS Incident Of THe Dog IN The Night Time...

A Trip To Little India

On the 14th of Janurary, Miss Thai brought us, the NE Ambassadors to a trip at Little India. It was on the Pongal Festival. After the journey, I learnt that Pongal Festival is the most important festival for the Indians. It is also called the Harvest Festival. It is from 13 January to 21st January. Pongal Festival is celebrated in January each year. This festival has its origins in South India where farming is a major activity. Pongal Festival is the celebration of a good harvest. In modern Singapore, Pongal Festival is also celebrated as the commencement of the auspicious Tamil month of Thao. Pongal Festival is ever popular here in Singapore as it is a joyous festival which represents the tradition of giving thanks for all good things.

Pongal Festival is celebrated over four days. On the first day, Bhogi, old clothes and things are discarded marking the begining of a new life. The second day, Surya Pongal, is celebrated by boiling fresh milk, rice and sugar early in the morning in a new pot and allowing it to boil over. This sweet dish is then offered to the Gods for the mmany blessins one receives during the year. People prepare savouries and sweets, visit each other's homes and exchange greetings. The third day, Mattu Pongal, is the days when cows are honoured - for plouging the fields and for the milk they provide. On this day, cattle are bathed, their horns polished and painted in bright colours, and flower garlands placed around their necks.
